SPARE THE ROD: Shaken, quite shaken

Let's not belabor this point: "Quantum of Solace," the new James Bond film, pistol whips its audience. Grinding yet elegant action dominates the movie. Daniel Craig delivers his comedic lines with the toss-away aplomb of Sean Connery.

And that's saying something.

The opening is tough, brutal and thrilling, yet it ends with a laugh that is not only appropriate but dead-on.

Olga Kurylenko is a spitting, angry hellcat as Camille, the woman who goes a long way toward redeeming Bond after "Casino Royale," in which the love of his life killed herself after betraying him. Camille is a woman with her own agenda and an undeniable ability to more than take care of herself. As many times as Bond saves her, she saves him.

One of the overarching themes here is the inability to tell one's friends from one's enemies, and the viewer is presented with that dilemma as well. This is not a one-sided Bond movie. It is multi-layered and involving.

From a devout Bond fan: Go see it. But be forewarned: This is not your grandfather's Bond.
