Ding Dong! Affliction MMA is dead

Well Affliction MMA announced earlier that they were cancelling their Aug. 1 card because they couldn't properly promote a replacement main event after Josh Barnett tested positive for steroids.

Late Friday, the word is that Affliction is done in the MMA promotion business and that they'll go back to just making t-shirts.

There's also word from Yahoo sports that they'll be a sponsor in the UFC again.

Last year Seth Petruzelli was given the dubious honor of the man responsible for sinking Elite XC.

I guess that makes Barnett the man that sunk Affliction.

Nevermind that both companies were so deep in debt that it wasn't funny.

First question now is: What happenss with Fedor Emelianenko?

He had one fight left on his contract with Affliction.

Affliction was in talks to merge with Strikeforce. Does this mean that "The Last Emporer" is headed to the Strikeforce cage?

I doubt it. I don't think there's enough quality heavyweights in Strikeforce to make it worth his while.

So does he become a free agent again? Maybe.

Which means once again it's time to start the Fedor to the UFC rumors all over again for the third year in a row.

As for the rest of the Affliction talent roster, I can see them being split up between Strikforce, the UFC and probably the DREAM promotion in Japan.

And Fedor has stated that he always wants to spend New Year's Eve fighting in Japan.

Not saying that will have any sway this time, just putting it out there as a reminder.

So Affliction now joins the promotion graveyard with Elite XC, the IFL (International Fight League) and Pride FC among others.

And the UFC and Strikeforce just keep on moving right along.

Until Next Time
