Anonymous Dillinger letterOn Thursday, I received an anonymous letter in the mail. It was written in a slightly shaky cursive, unsigned and contained no return address information. I couldn't ever read the postmark. I have no idea what else to do with it, so I'll let the letter speak for itself. Here is the text, as far as I can make it out. I have corrected some spelling and added some punctuation, but I don't believe it alters the spirit of the letter. A few awkward, but important, passages have been untouched and are noted with [sic]. Here goes: "Hello, I want to tell you a Dillinger story that you have never heard before. We lived at Windfall, In. and my father worked for a company that had some cattle and it was my father's job to feed and water them and they had a windmill to pump the water for them. The windmill broke down and my father had to get a man to repair it. He went to this man's house to get him and when he went to the door to talk to him, he heard this man say, 'He's OK, John, he's a good friend of mine.' My father said when he went inside the house to talk to the man, he saw some money on the table. This man told my father that when John and the boys would come back and had change and small money, they would give it to his daughter they had her pregnant help her [sic]. This man went with my father and fixed the windmill. A couple of weeks later my father went to get his hair cut and when he walked in the barber shop, there sat John in the chair getting a haircut. The barber told father 'Come on in, you're next' and my father 'That's OK, you are busy, I will come back later' and left [sic]. My father no way he wanted to be in there with John and the bank setting across the street [sic]. I am in my upper 80 and know this is true. The house is 2 miles N. and 1 mile west of Windfall right at the corner where they could leave in any direction. The barn they kept the cars in has been torn down. There was a baby born and lives in this area so I am not telling any names and don't want to embarass anybody. I saw the lady in red one time. That's another story." Draw your own conclusions.
