Super Bowl symmetry: Two guys named PierreJust three days into the two-week frenzy of hoopla leading up to the Super Bowl, it occurs to me that the game will feature what must be an NFL first and certainly a rarity: two guys named Pierre. To wit, the Indianapolis Colts wide receiver, surname Garcon, and New Orleans Saints running back, Thomas. Each belongs to one of the most formidable offenses in the league. In his second pro season, Garcon has become a big-play complement to the Colts' core of Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark and rookie Austin Collie. One of Peyton Manning's favorite targets, Garcon caught 47 passes for 765 yards and four touchdowns this season, and set a record for receptions in the AFC Championship game with 11. Thomas is part of the Saints' three-headed running monster that also features Mike Bell and Reggie Bush. He gained 703 yards on 147 carries this season and scored six touchdowns, including one against Minnesota in the NFC Championship game. A French twist on American football? Maybe not, although Garcon's family connections to Haiti have gained much media attention since the devastating earthquake there. Still, it's an interesting side note amid the avalanche of coverage.
