SPARE THE ROD: High 'Five'!

Mahalo!

Word comes that CBS is investing in a pilot for an updated version of its classic police drama "Hawaii Five-0." Reportedly, the main character would be the son of original Hawaii State Police operative Steve McGarrett, played by the late Jack Lord. (I'd normally slip a James Bond reference in here to remind people that Lord played Felix Leiter in 1962's "Dr. No." But I won't.)

According to the report, the series will stick as close as possible to the original. It is to be hoped that a really nice reproduction of the opening titles is part of that, along with a rockin' cover of the theme music.

But who can they get to play Chris McGarrett? Will the character be, perhaps, part Hawaiian? If so, I would like to suggest John Cho. He appeared in the "Harold and Kumar" movies, as well as the first "American Pie" films. And next year, he will portray Hikaru Sulu in the J.J. Abrams version of "Star Trek."

Book him, CBS.
