SPARE THE ROD: Seven years on ...

Today is the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the U.S.

I just watched a replay of NBC's live coverage of the events, the exact moment that the second tower fell. And I felt the same wrenching pain in my gut as I felt in my apartment in Encino, Calif., on that morning, calling my roommates in to watch the unbelievable images.

Whatever you think of the current wars and how they're being handled, no matter what your politics, no matter what your religion or viewpoint, take a moment today to remember that day and those 3,000 people who died in the agonizing minutes of that clean, blue September morning seven years ago.

And think about how, after a horrendous infamy like that, we were still the luckiest people on earth.

God bless America. Truly.
